Tree or Vrikasana is a lovely balancing yoga posture and has many benefits. It stretches the thighs, groins, torso, and shoulders, builds strength in the ankles and calves, and tones the abdominal muscles. Although holding the balance can be challenging when you can hold that point of stillness it is very calming and meditative.
I came across an except from the lovely poem below on an Instagram post and just had to find the the full text. As you will see from the photos I’ve been embracing the feeling of this poem by doing tree at a variety of outdoor locations!
The poem is written by Ilan Shamir, whose name literally means “protector of the trees” and has lived his life planting, celebrating and writing about trees. He lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and has planted over 100,000 trees thought nonprofit organisations in the US and Central America.
Stand Tall and Proud
Sink your roots deeply into the Earth
Reflect the light of a greater source
Think long term
Go out on a limb
Remember your place among all living beings
Embrace with joy the changing seasons
For each yields its own abundance
The Energy and Birth of Spring
The Growth and Contentment of Summer
The Wisdom to let go of leaves in the Fall
The Rest and Quiet Renewal of Winter
Feel the wind and the sun
And delight in their presence
Look up at the moon that shines down upon you
And the mystery of the stars at night.
Seek nourishment from the good things in life
Earth, fresh air, light
Be content with your natural beauty
Drink plenty of water
Let your limbs sway and dance in the breezes
