Late Summer newsletter

After much procrastination I have just sent out my second Yogavision Newsletter! This has been emailed out to everyone who has attended my classes. My aim is to do a monthly update with news of classes and events now that we are out of lock down (everything crossed that it stays that way.) I’m also going to be sharing some general tips and practices for yoga and for well being generally so if you would like to be kept updated then please sign up!

Meanwhile you can read the august newsletter below!

Namaste lovely yoga friends! As I type the clear blue sky in the picture above is just a distant memory – the grey clouds have rolled in and it is damp and feeling rather autumnal here in Carbrooke! Hopefully the forecast of good weather for the weekend will be accurate and we will see the sun again very soon!

So much has happened since I sent out my first newsletter over two years ago (where has the time gone!) with well over a year of lockdowns, disruptions and a complete change to normal life. Hopefully, like me you are all now emerging healthy and happy into the new reality!

One of the things I learned in lockdown was to really take ownership of my health and wellbeing. Having practiced yoga for many years and then becoming a teacher, this is pretty much a given, but the first lockdown made me realise that I also needed to give my overall fitness a bit of a boost! So in  April 2020 we signed up to couch to 5k  (that is my husband, daughter and I – henceforth know as the lockdown 3!) as well as a series of  online HIIT workout challenges. Both have been excellent complements to my yoga practice and I’m proud to say that I’m still running and sticking to a workout schedule over a year later! Consistency really is the key!

Some of you will also know that I recorded daily yoga videos all the way through the first lockdown. Unlike many teachers I did not take to Zoom but decided to upload these to YouTube for everyone to access – and they are all still there if any of you are interested, all sorted by play lists! I began a few of my in-person classes back at the end of May – following all of the COVID guidelines of course- and offering these just to my regular students. To date these have been very popular and it has been so lovely reconnecting with people back on the mat! During August I am continuing these classes but as we move into Autumn I will be opening up more spaces and more classes as set out below.

CLASS UPDATES
Following the relaxing of the lockdown I began classes again in May. I also took the decision to move the Thompson class to Carbrooke as it was more straightforward for me to set up and clean, being a member of the committee. This has actually been a great success and the class has been full! Although most rules have now been relaxed, like most classes I am continuing to follow COVID safety guidelines which can be found on my website.

Starting in September I will be restarting my Monday evening class at Carbrooke Village Hall. As with all other classes booking can be made via my website.

NEW YOGA FOR BEGINNERS
A couple of years ago I ran a very successful Yoga for complete beginners course and I’m pleased to say that I’m planning another for the early Autumn. This will be aimed at those who have not practiced yoga before or those who would like a bit of a refresher.

I will be posting more details nearer the time so watch this space.
Keep me updated about new classes
AUTUMN WORKSHOP
I’m really excited to announce that later in the Autumn I will be running a yoga and sound bath workshop with the lovely Rose of Kismet Massage and Sound Therapy  at a fabulous new local venue.  We are in the early stages of planning – more information will be available soon! AND BREATHE

As well as all of the fitness challenges I’ve undertaken during lockdown I’ve also been doing lots of breathing! “Well of course you’ve been breathing” I hear you all say – “you have no choice!”

Although that is very true, we do have a real choice about how we breathe and the quality of our breath. I talk about this a great deal in my classes as pranayama is one of the fundamental parts of yoga. Breathing correctly can boost everything from our respiratory to our lymphatic system and can substantially improve your physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.

Tips for breathing well include:
  • breathing in and out through your nose not your mouth
  • breathe using your diaphragm rather than your chest – your belly should balloon and rise first
  • keep your breathing regular, gentle, quiet and slow where ever you can
One lovely calming breathing technique that really helps with stress and anxiety is Box Breathing. It is really simple and you can practice it anywhere, any time.

1. Inhale through your nose for a count of four
2. Hold your breath for a count of four
3. Exhale for a count of four
4. Hold for a count of four
5. Repeat for four rounds

If you are on Instagram and fancy starting the day with a breathing practice and some great relaxing tunes then I highly recommend you take a look at @breathpod. Run by coach and DJ Stuart Sandeman, he has been running free morning sessions at 7.30am since the first lockdown – a great way to start the day!

Happy breathing folks!!
AND FINALLY…

I hope that you have enjoyed this Yogavision newsletter – even if you are not a regular at my classes anymore I hope you are finding the time to practice a bit of yoga!

I hope to see you soon at a class or workshop – remember you can see some of what I get up to – including mini yoga practices – on my Instagram account!

Big yoga love
